Written by GARY G. WYNE

Thirty-four million nine hundred thousand results. Having Googled “risk analysis,” this number was the immediate result. Twenty-five million eight hundred thousand results. This number is the Google result for “risk assessment.”

These numbers are overwhelming. Given their magnitude, one could conclude that everything that could be written has been written about risk analysis and risk assessment.

In the spirit of these numbers, this article is not an attempt to add one more promotion of the added value or the basic planning foundation provided by either a risk assessment, a risk analysis, or both but rather to present to the reader a technique this author has used, in many cases, to obtain ninety percent of the benefit of a full risk analysis with 10 percent of the effort. The author is the first to concede that this technique is not 100 percent all inclusive and is not fool-proof; however, over years and multiple client circumstances it has provided a substantial and dependable building block with which to construct emergency response plans and has a potential for disaster recovery and business continuity plans too. The author leaves it to the reader to determine the value this technique brings to each situation and its appropriateness for use.

According to a ProMed report, recent studies are finding that the earlier guidance for employers to tell the workforce they can return to work “a few days after the fever breaks” is appearing to be based on seasonal influenza experience. The period of contagion for H1N1 in a study by the Institute of Public Health in Quebec suggests patients are contagious for up to a week. A hospital in Singapore studied virus availability in the noses and throats of H1N1 cases, and found viable viruses for up to 16 days, though the average was about 5 days. Thus, the “new guidance” for H1N1 patients should be considered tobe: “Stay home until you’ve stopped coughing,” which is the most prevalent means of effectively “sharing” the virus.

This also suggests pandemic planners need to ratchet up their expectations for absentee rates, and update their awareness training materials accordingly.

From the DRJ Website. http://www.drj.com/index.php?option=com_myblog&show=H1N1-Pandemic-Influenza-New-Guidance.html&Itemid=170

Diane Mack worries a lot. In fact, she is a professional class worrier.

When she sees expanses of glass, Mack cringes. When large crowds gather, she is anxious. Mack can’t help but look for potential threats and danger.

It all comes with the territory of working to make sure the campus has the right policies, equipment, and procedures to keep everyone on campus as safe as can be.

Mack, who had been director for strategic planning at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, joined IUPUI on January 2, 2008 as the Emergency Preparedness Manager.

At Homeland Security, Mack helped set the course the state took when it came to developing homeland security and emergency management initiatives. In her new role, she will help develop plans to protect the campus from hazards that come with being a major urban university.
